Recording isn't working

Nothing happens when you record, or no result appears? Work through these checks.

Written by Dolfinspeak Support

If you hold the record key and nothing happens, or no result appears, work through these in order.

  1. Check the record key. The default is Option on a Mac and Right Alt on Windows. Hold it to record and let go to finish. If you changed it, check Settings → Shortcuts.

  2. Check Microphone permission. On a Mac, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure Dolfinspeak is on. See Grant permissions. On Windows, check that microphone access is on in Windows privacy settings.

  3. Look in History. Every finished recording is saved there, even when nothing was pasted. If you can see the result in History, the recording worked and the problem is pasting.

  4. Check pasting. Make sure a text field is focused before you finish recording. On a Mac, pasting into other apps needs Accessibility permission. In Settings → Delivery, if Paste into app is greyed out, grant Accessibility on the Permissions page.

  5. Restart Dolfinspeak. Quit fully and reopen it.

A recording stops at 90 minutes, or 30 minutes with a translation filter. Dolfinspeak warns you first, and your transcript is saved.

Messages you might see

  • "Processing failed. Raw text delivered." (or "Raw text copied." or "Showing raw text.") The text was ready, but the filter couldn't run, so you got the plain text instead. Open History and choose Retry to run the filter again.

  • "You're out of free uses. Upgrade to Pro to keep recording." Your Pro trial uses have run out. Dolfinspeak won't start a new recording until you upgrade. See Manage your subscription.

  • "Sign in to Dolfinspeak to record." You've been signed out. Sign in, then record again.

  • "Your plan is still loading. Try again in a moment." Wait a moment, then record again.

  • "Couldn't reach Dolfinspeak to load your plan. Check your connection." Check your internet connection, then record again.

  • "No words heard. If someone spoke, check the spoken language." Check Primary language in Settings → Language. The audio is in History.

  • "Update required." Install the update to keep using Dolfinspeak.

Still stuck? Email [email protected] with your app version (Settings → About), whether you're on Mac or Windows, your system version and what you tried.
